Why SEO Could Be a Career Choice in Nepal

I am nobody (at top) to give you career advice, and I won’t claim SEO is the best career option in Nepal. I have just started this journey myself.

Had I been Elon Musk and said “Money does not matter,” I would have had divine thoughts.

Had I been a scholar with a few PhDs and said “Getting a degree doesn’t matter,” I would have been applauded.

Had I been Neil Patel and said, “Digital marketing is the right profession for you; nothing else matters,” I would have gained followers.

But I’m not any of these. I’m just someone who, despite a successful background in engineering, wasn’t satisfied with my career. I had unachieved goals and unmet expectations, which ultimately led me to explore SEO.

SEO a Better Career Option in Nepal

One Of The Struggles of My Previous Career

I grew up in Lalitpur and went to Lalitpur Madhyamik Vidyalaya. I didn’t travel far from home. I had never been beyond Newroad until after school. The most furthest and familiar places to me were Jamal and Ghantaghar, and even a trip to places like Newroad, Asan, or Thamel felt like an entire day’s task—an exhausting venture.

As I got older and turned into a professional for a schoolboy things changed. I began commuting long distances for work, from Satdobato to Panipokhari, which was a completely different experience. The daily 45-minute to 1-hour commute on my motorbike through the busy streets of Kathmandu became part of my routine. And when some “VIPs” were travelling, the traffic got even worse.

Looking back, I realized how different my life had become from my childhood. The constant traffic, the long hours, and the feeling that I wasn’t making the most of my time made me unhappy. It wasn’t just the distance that bothered me, but also the daily grind. I started to feel like I needed a change—something that would give me more freedom and allow me to enjoy life in a better way.

Exploring Lucrative Payment Options and Job Flexibility

After I completed my bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from Bangalore, India in 2016, I felt that my country needed  me and that I might be of some use.

Jayanta Dai referred me to join where he was working, and I was selected. My first job was to help the people affected by earthquakes in the parts of Gorkha and Sindhupalchowk. It was for a few months.

After that, I was deployed to Simara by the same consulting company for an Apartment project of Surya Nepal Pvt. Ltd., where I stayed for more than 2 years.

After that project, I thought I should be with my family so I tried finding a job based in Kathmandu.

After a lot of interviews and applying to different job portals, I got a call from a design consulting firm.

Where I was offered mere 8K per month. I had to catch a tampoo to Lagankhel and another one from there to reach Teku where that office was situated (The fare to Lagankhel was Rs. 15 and from Lagankhel to Teku was 20 at that time, I had not made any student ID card to claim discounts as I thought doing that was wrong).

Seeking Freedom and Flexibility in Work

During my first job, I used to wake up, meet the villagers, and walk and walk to survey the condition of present houses analyze whether they are habitable, and inform the villagers about the correct way to re-construct. I had spent a lot of nights at the animal shed (goth) and a few nights on an empty stomach.

While in my second job, I used to be at the site at around 8:30 in the morning and leave at 8 in the evening, and the construction didn’t stop for weekends.

The daily grind in my earlier jobs, including waking up at dawn to meet villagers and working on construction sites from early morning to late evening, took a toll on my personal life. I longed for the freedom to work on my terms, spend more time with family, and have flexibility in my job.

SEO offered me just that. The ability to work near at home and from home when needed, manage my time, and still pursue a career in an industry with great potential became a dream come true.

SEO could be a Middle-class Problem Solver

I with my friends had just registered a construction company and to much surprise won a bid, within the first few months, to tender for the construction of a road at Damauli when the COVID-19 pandemic hit.

Do you remember when we were like prisoners and were bound to be inside the walls of our own homes!!

I had a job that claimed that paying the employers at that time almost got them bankrupt and I had a project a hundred miles away that was very hard to reach.

Had the lockdown extended for a few months more, I cannot imagine the situation.

SEO can also help solve some of the struggles I’ve faced throughout my career. During the COVID-19 lockdown, when I couldn’t travel or reach job sites, I realized the importance of having a career that doesn’t depend on physical location. SEO as a career offers job stability, a growing demand for skilled professionals, and the ability to contribute to a business’s growth without being stuck in an office.

Many of my friends are still struggling with finances, work culture, and the freedom to take vacations. They all wonder if there is a way out—SEO might just be the solution.

Why SEO Is Worth Considering as a Career in Nepal

Although I’m not in a position to tell you that SEO is the perfect career choice, I can tell you this: the flexibility, the growing demand, and the potential to earn a good income have been key motivators for me.

Embracing new opportunities is essential for professional and personal growth. SEO offers just that—a chance to learn, grow, and build a future that is fulfilling, financially rewarding, and flexible.

I hold an engineering degree- a testament to rigorous study and renowned prestige according to our society, tried being an entrepreneur, held a job, and tried supporting my family.

I am starting to believe that my friends who went abroad right after their SLC, high school, and University studies did the right thing.

I was raised being taught the praises of Amar Singh Thapa, Bhakti Thapa, Bhimsen Thapa, Balbhadra Kunwar, and many more. I still get goosebumps when I think of Junga Bahadur Rana and “Kot Parva”.

I still stand up and sing when “Sayau Thunga” is played, with my right hand held on the left side of my chest.

And I still don’t want to regret not going abroad.

I want to Work from home at my flexible time, be with my family belong to a higher middle class, and not get bored by doing the same thing again and again without updating my style. These are my expectations from an SEO career.

Not just me, but most of my friends who are still in Nepal are not satisfied with their finances, working culture, and freedom to vacation.
